Published by Editions Didier Millet 2015.This large volume, drawing from the Rodger Dashow Collection, is simply one of the very best books available on the tribal art of Indonesia. The quality of the featured art is much, much higher than anything you would expect from a monograph based on single collection, and the photography matches the quality of the items - perfectly lit and almost visceral in its impact. The art featured is from :The Batak (Sumatra). Nias, Toraja (Sulawesi), Flores, Alaoro, Timor Leste, Sumba, Maluku, Korwar (Irian Jaya), Dayak (Borneo), Timor, Asmat (Irian Jaya)..Of my 700+ tribal art books, this will be one of the first 20 which I carry out of the burning building.
This magnum opus by Bruce Carpenter is truly a labor of love. He has honored this splendid collection by carrying out meticulous research, accurate descriptions, and sensitive design.. A special note must be given to the book's introduction by Andrew Gurevich and Robert Walter who have provided a solid mythological foundation so that readers (and viewers) will better understand and enjoy this collection. Drawing upon the work of Joseph Campbell, Rollo May, Carl Jung (and others), Gurevich and Walter have linked the mythological and its expression, the unconscious and craftmanship, the shamanic and the artistic. They also provide insight into the value of collections of this nature because they "allow us to more clearly see the emergent archetypes of collective experience." This tribute to Rodger Dashow, the collector of this artwork, is underlined by Steven G. Alpert's preface, which describes the assiduous way in which Dashow ferreted out the "genuine from the bogus." The result of this devotion, by both Dashow and Carpenter, makes this book a resource and a treasure for all who peruse it, savor it, and -- indeed -- devour it.
